Description

A hearty and flavorful Toasted Tuscan Sausage Sandwich featuring Italian sausages, roasted red peppers, melty provolone cheese, and fresh basil on rustic ciabatta bread, toasted to perfection in a skillet or panini press for a satisfying meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Meat

  • 2 Italian sausages (mild or spicy), cooked and sliced

Bread

  • 1 ciabatta or rustic Italian bread loaf, sliced

Vegetables

  • 1/2 cup roasted red peppers, sliced
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • Fresh basil leaves (optional)

Dairy

  • 1/2 cup provolone or mozzarella cheese, sliced

Oils & Seasonings

  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Cook the Italian sausages: Cook the Italian sausages thoroughly using your preferred method until they are fully cooked, then slice them into rounds.
  2. Sauté garlic and peppers: Preheat a skillet over medium heat. Add the olive oil and minced garlic, sautéing briefly until fragrant. Add the roasted red peppers and cook for 2 minutes to warm them through.
  3. Prepare the bread: Slice the ciabatta bread loaf and brush each slice lightly with olive oil for extra crispiness and flavor.
  4. Assemble the sandwich: On one slice of the oiled bread, layer the sliced Italian sausage, warmed roasted red peppers, and slices of provolone or mozzarella cheese.
  5. Add basil and top bread: Place fresh basil leaves on top of the layered ingredients if using. Cover with the second slice of bread to complete the sandwich.
  6. Toast the sandwich: Toast the sandwich in a panini press until golden brown and the cheese melts, or alternatively, toast it in the skillet pressing down firmly for about 4-5 minutes per side until golden and melty.
  7. Serve: Slice the toasted sandwich and serve warm for best flavor.

Notes

  • You can swap provolone cheese with mozzarella or another favorite melting cheese.
  • Adjust the spice level of the sausages to your preference; both mild and spicy work well.
  • Fresh basil is optional but adds a wonderful aromatic note.
  • Use a panini press for easier toasting or a heavy skillet pressed with a spatula.
  • For added flavor, you may spread a thin layer of mustard or mayo before assembling.
