Description

This Fastest Puff Pastry Appetizer is a quick and delicious snack made with layers of puff pastry, tangy mustard, melted mozzarella, cooked chicken, and fresh dill. Perfect for entertaining or a tasty treat, it bakes to golden perfection and is served with ketchup for dipping.

Ingredients

Scale

Pastry and Spread

  • 2 x 400g puff pastry sheets (store-bought)
  • 3–4 teaspoons mustard (adjust to taste)
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Fillings

  • 150g hard mozzarella cheese, grated or thinly sliced
  • 200g cooked chicken, chopped into small pieces
  • A bunch of fresh dill, finely chopped
  • 150g ketchup (for dipping or spreading)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper for easy cleanup.
  2. Prepare the First Pastry Layer: Unroll one sheet of puff pastry on the prepared baking sheet.
  3. Spread Mustard: Spread 3–4 teaspoons of mustard evenly across the surface of the puff pastry, leaving a small border around the edges to seal properly.
  4. Layer the Fillings: Sprinkle half of the grated mozzarella cheese evenly over the mustard layer, then add half of the chopped cooked chicken on top.
  5. Add Fresh Dill: Scatter half of the finely chopped fresh dill evenly over the chicken layer to add a fragrant freshness.
  6. Add the Second Layer of Puff Pastry: Place the second sheet of puff pastry on top of the layered fillings and gently press down the edges to seal all the ingredients inside.
  7. Brush with Egg Wash: Brush the top of the pastry with the beaten egg carefully to ensure a glossy and golden finish after baking.
  8. Score the Pastry: Use a sharp knife to lightly score the top layer of the puff pastry into squares or rectangles, being careful not to cut all the way through to allow for even rising and easy slicing later.
  9. Bake: Place the pastry in the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes until the pastry is puffed up and golden brown.
  10. Serve: Allow the pastry to cool for about 5 minutes, then slice into the scored squares or rectangles. Serve warm with ketchup for dipping or spreading.

Notes

  • You can adjust the mustard quantity depending on your preference for tanginess.
  • Cooked chicken can be substituted with cooked turkey or ham if preferred.
  • Make sure the edges are well sealed so the filling does not leak during baking.
  • For a vegetarian option, omit chicken and add sautéed mushrooms or spinach with the cheese.
  • Use fresh dill for the best flavor, but dried dill can also be used if fresh is not available.
  • This appetizer is best served warm but can be reheated gently.
