Description

A classic recipe for Texas Roadhouse-style rolls that are soft, fluffy, and buttery. These homemade rolls are perfect for any meal and feature a tender crumb with a golden crust, achieved through a combination of yeast fermentation and baking.

Ingredients

Scale

Yeast Mixture

  • 1 packet active dry yeast (about 2 1/4 teaspoons)
  • 1 1/4 cups warm milk (105–110°F)

Dough

  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, room temperature (1/2 stick)
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 3 1/2 to 4 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for kneading

For Brushing

  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

Instructions

  1. Dissolve Yeast: In a large mixing bowl, dissolve yeast in warm milk. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until the mixture becomes foamy, indicating the yeast is active.
  2. Mix Wet Ingredients: Add sugar, softened butter, egg, and kosher salt to the yeast mixture and stir until well combined.
  3. Add Flour Gradually: Gradually add all-purpose flour, one cup at a time, mixing after each addition until a soft dough begins to form.
  4. Knead Dough: On a floured surface, knead the dough for about 8 minutes until it is smooth and elastic, developing the gluten structure.
  5. First Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it has doubled in size.
  6. Shape Rolls: Punch down the risen dough, roll it out on a floured surface to about 1/2-inch thickness, then cut into 2-inch squares or rounds.
  7. Second Rise: Arrange the dough pieces on a greased baking sheet, cover, and let them rise again for 30–45 minutes until puffy.
  8. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) preparing to bake the rolls.
  9. Bake Rolls: Bake the rolls in the preheated oven for 12–15 minutes, or until the tops turn golden brown.
  10. Butter Finish: Immediately brush the hot rolls with melted butter to give them a rich, shiny finish and extra flavor. Serve warm.

Notes

  • Ensure milk is warm but not hot to avoid killing the yeast.
  • You can substitute all-purpose flour with bread flour for a chewier texture.
  • Letting the dough rise in a warm, draft-free area helps achieve the best fluffiness.
  • Brush with garlic butter for a savory twist.
  • Rolls freeze well: wrap baked rolls in foil and freeze, then reheat before serving.
