Description

Sweet and Sticky Steak Bites are a quick and delicious dish featuring tender sirloin or flank steak cubes seared to perfection and tossed in a luscious honey-soy glaze. This recipe combines savory, sweet, and aromatic flavors with a simple yet effective cooking technique, making it a perfect weeknight dinner served over rice or vegetables.

Ingredients

Scale

Steak Bites

  • 500 g (1 lb) sirloin or flank steak, cut into bite-sized cubes
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil, divided

Glaze

  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons honey or brown sugar
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated (optional)

Garnish

  • Green onions or sesame seeds (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Steak Bites: In a bowl, season the steak pieces with salt and black pepper. Add the cornstarch and toss well to lightly coat each cube evenly, ensuring a slight crust will develop when seared.
  2. Sear the Steak Bites: Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add half the steak bites in a single layer and sear each side for 2–3 minutes until nicely browned. Remove and set aside. Repeat with the remaining steak using another 1 tablespoon of olive oil as needed.
  3. Sauté Aromatics: In the same skillet, add garlic and grated ginger (if using). Sauté for about 30 seconds until fragrant, taking care not to burn the garlic.
  4. Make the Glaze: Pour in the soy sauce and honey (or brown sugar) into the skillet. Stir and let the mixture simmer for 2–3 minutes until it slightly thickens, creating a sticky glaze.
  5. Combine and Heat Through: Return the seared steak bites to the skillet. Toss gently to coat each piece evenly with the glaze and heat through for an additional 1–2 minutes.
  6. Garnish and Serve: Remove from heat and garnish with chopped green onions or sesame seeds if desired. Serve the sweet and sticky steak bites hot over rice, mashed potatoes, or your favorite roasted vegetables for a wholesome meal.

Notes

  • The cornstarch coating helps achieve a nice crust on the steak bites and thickens the glaze slightly.
  • Use fresh ginger for the best flavor, but it can be omitted if preferred.
  • Adjust sweetness by using either honey or brown sugar depending on taste.
  • Make sure not to overcrowd the pan when searing to ensure even browning.
  • Best served immediately for maximum juiciness and flavor.
