Description

A classic Southern Peach Cobbler featuring a luscious peach filling spiced with cinnamon and nutmeg, topped with a buttery, golden batter. This comforting dessert bakes to perfection with a crisp top and juicy, tender peaches beneath.

Ingredients

Scale

Peach Filling

  • 8 cups fresh peaches, peeled and sliced (or 6 cups frozen peaches, thawed)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup light brown sugar, packed
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch

Batter & Topping

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (1 stick)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) to prepare for baking the cobbler.
  2. Prepare Peach Mixture: In a large bowl, gently combine the peeled and sliced peaches with 1 cup granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and cornstarch until peaches are evenly coated. Set aside to allow flavors to meld.
  3. Melt Butter: Place the unsalted butter in a 9×13-inch baking dish and put it in the oven until the butter has melted completely. Carefully remove from the oven once melted.
  4. Make Batter: In a separate bowl, mix the flour, 1 cup granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the milk while stirring until a smooth batter forms.
  5. Assemble Cobbler: Pour the batter evenly over the melted butter in the baking dish. Do not mix; the butter will integrate during baking.
  6. Add Peach Topping: Spoon the peach mixture evenly over the batter without stirring, allowing the batter to rise during baking and form a cobbler crust.
  7. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes until the top is golden brown and the cobbler is set and bubbly.
  8. Cool and Serve: Remove from oven and let cool slightly before serving. Best served warm, optionally with vanilla ice cream for extra indulgence.

Notes

  • Use fresh peaches during peach season for optimal flavor; frozen peaches are a convenient alternative.
  • Do not stir the batter and peach mixture once assembled to allow the distinct cobbler texture.
  • For a richer topping, use whole milk or substitute part of the milk with cream.
  • This cobbler is excellent served warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
