Ingredients
Scale
Fruits
- 2 cups sour cherries (fresh or frozen)
- 3 ripe plums, pitted and chopped
- 1 orange, sliced
- 1 lemon or lime, sliced
Spices and Sweeteners
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 3 whole cloves
- 2 to 3 tablespoons honey or maple syrup
Other
- 3 cups water
- Fresh thyme (optional, for garnish)
Instructions
- Preheat the saucepan: Place a saucepan over medium heat to warm it up before adding the ingredients.
- Add the fruits and spices: Add sour cherries, chopped plums, orange slices, lemon or lime slices, cinnamon stick, cloves, and water into the saucepan.
- Begin heating: Stir the mixture gently and heat for about 5 minutes until it begins to steam, preparing for simmering.
- Bring to simmer and release juices: Increase the heat slightly to bring the mixture to a gentle simmer. Use a spoon to lightly mash the fruits to help release their natural juices and intensify the flavors.
- Simmer and sweeten: Let the mixture simmer for 15 to 20 minutes. In the last 5 minutes, add honey or maple syrup, adjusting the sweetness to your taste.
- Finish and strain: Turn off the heat. If you prefer a smoother drink, strain the mixture to remove solids.
- Serve: Pour the warm winter warmer into mugs or glasses. Garnish with citrus slices and cherries, and optionally fresh thyme. Enjoy while warm.
Notes
- If fresh cherries are unavailable, frozen cherries work just as well.
- Adjust the sweetness with more or less honey/maple syrup depending on your preference.
- Straining the drink is optional; leaving the fruit in adds texture and body.
- For an adult version, consider adding a splash of your favorite whiskey or brandy after cooking.
- Fresh thyme garnish adds a lovely herbal aroma but can be omitted if unavailable.
