Ingredients
Scale
Sausage Filling
- 1 pound (450 g) sausage meat (pork or chicken)
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
Pastry and Glaze
- 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- 1 tablespoon milk
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare Baking Sheet: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ensure even baking.
- Make the Sausage Mixture: In a mixing bowl, combine the sausage meat, finely chopped onion, minced garlic, dried thyme, salt, black pepper, and breadcrumbs. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are evenly incorporated.
- Prepare the Puff Pastry: Lightly flour a clean surface and roll out the thawed puff pastry into a rectangle shape, large enough to hold the sausage mixture along its center.
- Assemble the Sausage Rolls: Spread the sausage mixture evenly along the center of the pastry, leaving about one inch of space around the edges. Carefully fold the pastry over the sausage filling to enclose it completely, pressing the edges firmly to seal.
- Cut and Arrange Rolls: Slice the sealed pastry into 2-inch rolls. Place each roll seam side down on the prepared baking sheet to help maintain shape during baking.
- Apply Egg Wash: In a small bowl, whisk the beaten egg with milk to create an egg wash. Brush this mixture over the top of each roll, which will give them a shiny, golden finish once baked.
- Bake: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed and golden brown and the sausage is cooked through.
- Serve Warm: Once baked, remove the sausage rolls from the oven and let them cool slightly before serving warm for best flavor and texture.
Notes
- Add a teaspoon of Dijon mustard or finely chopped fresh herbs to the sausage mixture to enhance the flavor.
- For a lighter version, substitute pork sausage with chicken or turkey sausage meat.
- Sausage rolls can be prepared ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator. Reheat them in the oven for 5–10 minutes before serving to regain crispiness.
- To accommodate gluten-free diets, use gluten-free puff pastry and gluten-free breadcrumbs.
