Description

This sausage queso dip is a creamy, cheesy, and mildly spicy appetizer perfect for parties and casual gatherings. Made with ground sausage, cream cheese, shredded cheddar, diced tomatoes with green chilies, and jalapeños, it’s a flavorful dip that pairs perfectly with tortilla chips or fresh veggies.

Ingredients

Scale

Meat

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground sausage

Cheeses

  • 8 oz (225 g) cream cheese, softened
  • 2 cups (200 g) shredded cheddar cheese

Vegetables and Seasonings

  • 1 can (14.5 oz or 410 g) diced tomatoes with green chilies
  • 1 can (4 oz or 113 g) diced green chilies
  • 1-2 jalapeños, diced
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Brown the sausage: Heat a large skillet over medium heat and cook the ground sausage for 5-7 minutes, breaking it into smaller pieces with a spatula until fully browned and cooked through.
  2. Add cream cheese: Add the softened cream cheese to the skillet with the sausage. Stir continuously until the cream cheese is melted and fully combined with the sausage for a creamy base.
  3. Add cheddar cheese and vegetables: Gradually stir in the shredded cheddar cheese, allowing it to melt evenly. Then add the diced tomatoes with green chilies, canned diced green chilies, and diced jalapeños. Mix all ingredients thoroughly.
  4. Season and simmer: Sprinkle in garlic powder, onion powder, cumin, salt, and pepper to taste. Stir well to incorporate all seasonings. Reduce the heat to low and cook for an additional 5-10 minutes to let the flavors meld and the dip thicken slightly.
  5. Serve warm: Transfer the dip to a serving bowl and serve warm. Enjoy with tortilla chips, fresh vegetables, or your favorite dippers.

Notes

  • For a milder dip, reduce the amount of jalapeños or remove the seeds before dicing.
  • Use turkey or chicken sausage for a leaner version of the dip.
  • You can prepare this dip ahead of time and reheat it gently on the stovetop before serving.
  • Adding a splash of milk or cream can help adjust the consistency if the dip becomes too thick.
  • Supplement with chopped cilantro or green onions for an extra layer of freshness.
