Description

This Sausage, Gravy, & Biscuit Pie is a hearty and comforting breakfast or brunch dish featuring savory sausage gravy topped with golden baked biscuits. Perfectly seasoned with black pepper, garlic, and optional red pepper flakes for a slight kick, then finished with melted cheddar cheese and fresh parsley garnish. It’s a classic American comfort food that’s easy to prepare and sure to satisfy your morning or dinner cravings.

Ingredients

Scale

Sausage Gravy

  • 1 pound breakfast sausage
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Biscuit Topping

  • 1 can (16 oz) refrigerated biscuit dough (8 biscuits)

Garnish

  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F to ensure it’s at the perfect temperature for baking the biscuit pie.
  2. Cook Sausage: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the breakfast sausage until it’s browned and fully cooked, breaking it up into crumbles as it cooks. Once done, remove the sausage from the skillet and set it aside.
  3. Make Roux: Using the same skillet, melt the unsalted butter over medium heat. Whisk in the all-purpose flour to form a roux and cook for 1 to 2 minutes until it’s lightly golden and fragrant.
  4. Add Milk and Seasonings: Gradually whisk in the whole milk, stirring continuously until the mixture is smooth. Add salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and crushed red pepper flakes if using. Simmer the gravy for about 3 to 5 minutes, stirring frequently, until it thickens.
  5. Combine Sausage and Cheese: Stir the cooked sausage and shredded cheddar cheese into the thickened gravy, allowing the cheese to melt and create a rich, flavorful sauce.
  6. Assemble Pie: Pour the sausage gravy mixture into a greased 9-inch pie dish, spreading it evenly. Separate the refrigerated biscuit dough into individual biscuits and arrange them over the top of the gravy, spacing evenly.
  7. Bake: Place the pie dish in the preheated oven and bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the biscuits are golden brown and cooked through.
  8. Rest and Garnish: Remove the pie from the oven and let it rest for 5 minutes. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley if desired before serving.

Notes

  • For extra richness, add a splash of heavy cream to the gravy during the milk addition step.
  • You can substitute the refrigerated biscuit dough with homemade biscuits if preferred for a fresher taste.
  • This dish makes a perfect brunch item or a hearty breakfast-for-dinner option.
