Description

Sausage and Waffle Casserole is a warm, hearty breakfast dish combining crispy waffles, savory breakfast sausage, and melted cheddar cheese baked together in a rich egg custard. Perfect for a cozy morning meal that serves the whole family.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 8 pieces Frozen waffles
  • 1 pound Bulk breakfast sausage (Choose your favorite type)
  • 2 cups Shredded cheddar cheese (For melting richness)
  • 6 large Eggs (To bind ingredients)
  • 1 cup Milk (Whole or substitute with your choice)
  • 1 teaspoon Salt (Essential seasoning)
  • 1 teaspoon Ground black pepper (For added spice)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease an 8×8-inch casserole dish to prevent sticking and prepare for baking.
  2. Cook Sausage: In a skillet over medium heat, cook the bulk breakfast sausage until it is browned and fully cooked through, breaking it up into crumbles as it cooks for even texture.
  3. Prepare Waffles: Toast the frozen waffles until they become lightly crispy, then cut them into bite-sized squares for layering in the casserole.
  4. Layer Ingredients: In the greased casserole dish, layer half of the waffle pieces, then half of the cooked sausage, followed by half of the shredded cheddar cheese. Repeat these layers to build the casserole evenly.
  5. Mix Egg Mixture: In a bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, salt, and ground black pepper until smooth and well combined to create the custard that will bind the casserole.
  6. Assemble & Bake: Pour the egg mixture evenly over the layered ingredients in the casserole dish. Cover the dish with aluminum foil to maintain moisture during baking.
  7. Baking: Bake covered for 25 minutes. Then remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 15 to 20 minutes until the top is golden and the custard is set.
  8. Cool & Serve: Allow the casserole to cool for about 5 minutes before slicing and serving to let it set and make serving easier.

Notes

  • You can substitute whole milk with any plant-based milk for a dairy-free option.
  • Use any cheese variety like mozzarella or pepper jack for a different flavor profile.
  • Leftover casserole can be refrigerated and reheated in the oven or microwave for a quick breakfast.
  • Ensure the sausage is fully cooked to avoid any food safety issues.
  • Adjust seasoning according to taste; add herbs like thyme or paprika for extra flavor.
