Ingredients
Scale
Meat Mixture
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 small onion, diced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
Lasagna
- 12 oz lasagna noodles, cooked and drained
- 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese, divided
- 3 cups ricotta cheese
Parmesan Garlic Sauce
- 2 cups milk
- 4 tbsp butter
- 4 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp Italian seasoning
- Salt and pepper to taste
Garnish
- Fresh parsley, chopped (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) to prepare for baking the lasagna.
- Cook Meat Mixture: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef and diced onion until the beef is fully browned and the onion is soft. Drain off any excess fat. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute to release its aroma.
- Make Roux: In a separate saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook the mixture for 1-2 minutes, creating a roux that will thicken your sauce.
- Add Milk and Thicken Sauce: Gradually whisk in the milk while stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Continue cooking until the sauce thickens to a creamy consistency.
- Season Sauce: Remove the sauce from the heat. Stir in the Italian seasoning, half of the grated Parmesan cheese, and season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Prepare Ricotta Mixture: In a bowl, combine the ricotta cheese with a little salt and pepper to season evenly.
- Assemble Lasagna – Step 1: Spread a thin layer of the Parmesan garlic sauce on the bottom of your baking dish to prevent sticking and add flavor.
- Assemble Lasagna – Layers: Add a layer of cooked lasagna noodles, then half of the cooked beef mixture, spoon dollops of ricotta cheese over the beef, sprinkle a layer of mozzarella cheese, and drizzle with some of the Parmesan sauce. Repeat this layering process.
- Top and Cover: Finish the assembly with the remaining Parmesan garlic sauce and sprinkle the remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses evenly on top. Cover the dish with aluminum foil to keep moisture in.
- Bake: Bake covered for 25 minutes. Then remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the lasagna is bubbly and the top is golden brown.
- Rest and Serve: Let the lasagna rest for 10 minutes after baking to allow it to set. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley if desired before slicing and serving.
Notes
- Make sure to drain excess fat from the cooked ground beef to avoid a greasy lasagna.
- Use freshly grated Parmesan cheese for better melting and flavor.
- Letting the lasagna rest after baking helps it hold its shape when sliced.
- You can prepare the lasagna a day ahead and bake it just before serving.
- For a lower fat option, use part-skim mozzarella and ricotta cheeses.
