Description

A delicious and hearty Mushroom Swiss Patty Melt featuring juicy ground beef patties topped with melted Swiss cheese and sautéed mushrooms and onions, all grilled between buttered rye bread slices for a perfectly crispy and flavorful sandwich. Ready in just 30 minutes, this classic comfort food is perfect for a satisfying lunch or dinner.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Patties

  • 1 lb ground beef (80% lean)
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the Sautéed Vegetables

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup mushrooms, sliced (button or cremini)

For Assembling

  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 8 slices rye bread
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 tablespoon mayonnaise (optional, for extra richness)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Patties: In a bowl, combine the ground beef with Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined, then form the mixture into 4 equal-sized patties. Set aside to rest while preparing other ingredients.
  2. Sauté the Mushrooms and Onions: Heat the olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced onions and cook for about 5 minutes until softened and caramelized. Add the sliced mushrooms to the skillet and sauté for an additional 5-7 minutes, until mushrooms release their moisture and become tender. Remove the mixture from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Cook the Patties: Using the same skillet, cook the beef patties over medium heat for 4-5 minutes per side, or until they reach your desired doneness. During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of Swiss cheese on top of each patty so it melts over the meat.
  4. Assemble the Patty Melt: Spread softened butter on one side of each slice of rye bread. Optionally, spread mayonnaise on the unbuttered side for extra richness. Place a slice of bread, buttered side down, on the skillet over medium heat. Layer a Swiss cheese-topped patty on the bread, followed by a generous amount of sautéed mushrooms and onions. Top with another slice of rye bread, buttered side up.
  5. Grill the Sandwiches: Grill each sandwich for 3-4 minutes per side, pressing down gently with a spatula, until the bread is golden brown and crispy and the cheese is melted inside.
  6. Serve & Enjoy: Remove the patty melts from the skillet, slice them in half if desired, and serve immediately. They pair wonderfully with pickles or a side of fries.

Notes

  • Using 80% lean beef ensures a juicy and flavorful patty.
  • Worcestershire sauce adds a savory depth to the beef mixture.
  • Butter the bread generously to achieve a crisp, golden exterior when grilled.
  • Mayonnaise is optional but adds extra richness and moisture to the sandwich.
  • Press the sandwich gently while grilling to help melt the cheese evenly and compact the sandwich.
  • Serve hot for the best flavor and texture experience.
