Ingredients
Scale
Puff Pastry
- 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed if frozen
Filling
- 8 ounces mushrooms, finely chopped
- ½ cup shredded cheese (Gruyere, mozzarella, or cheddar)
- 2 tablespoons cream cheese, softened
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Egg Wash
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
Instructions
- Prepare the filling: Heat olive oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the finely chopped mushrooms and minced garlic. Cook until the mushrooms release their moisture and become golden brown, about 5-7 minutes. Season with salt and pepper, then remove from heat and let cool slightly.
- Mix the cheese filling: In a bowl, combine the cooked mushrooms with shredded cheese and softened cream cheese. Mix well to create a creamy, flavorful filling.
- Preheat oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Prepare puff pastry: Roll out the thawed puff pastry sheet on a floured surface. Cut into small squares or desired shapes suitable for bite-sized puff treats.
- Assemble puff bites: Place a small spoonful of the mushroom and cheese filling onto the center of each puff pastry square. Fold or cover with another piece of pastry if desired, pressing the edges to seal securely.
- Apply egg wash: Brush the tops of the assembled puff bites with beaten egg to achieve a golden, glossy finish during baking.
- Bake: Arrange the puff bites on the prepared baking sheet, spaced slightly apart. Bake in the preheated oven for 15-18 minutes or until puffed and golden brown.
- Serve warm: Remove from oven, allow to cool slightly, and serve warm as a delicious appetizer or snack.
Notes
- Use any cheese you prefer or have on hand; Gruyere adds a nice nutty flavor, but mozzarella or cheddar work well too.
- Make sure mushrooms are cooked thoroughly to avoid soggy pastry.
- For extra flavor, you can add fresh herbs like thyme or parsley to the filling.
- These can be made ahead and reheated in the oven before serving.
- Freeze uncooked puff bites on a baking sheet, then transfer to a bag for easy future baking.
