Description
This classic gyro meat recipe combines ground lamb and beef seasoned with traditional Mediterranean spices, baked to perfection for juicy, flavorful slices perfect for serving in pita bread with your favorite toppings.
Ingredients
Scale
Meat Mixture
- 1 lb ground lamb
- 1 lb ground beef
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 tsp dried oregano
- 1 tsp ground cumin
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
Topping
- 2 tbsp olive oil
Instructions
- Combine meats and spices: In a large mixing bowl, thoroughly combine the ground lamb and ground beef. Add the minced garlic, chopped onion, dried oregano, ground cumin, salt, and black pepper. Mix everything well to ensure all seasonings are evenly distributed throughout the meat mixture.
- Form the meat loaf: Transfer the seasoned meat mixture onto a prepared baking sheet. Shape it into a loaf approximately 2 inches thick, making sure it’s compact to hold together when cooked.
- Add olive oil and bake: Drizzle the olive oil evenly over the top of the meat loaf. Place the baking sheet into a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) and bake for 45 to 55 minutes, or until the meat is fully cooked and juices run clear.
- Rest the meat: Once baked, remove the meat loaf from the oven and allow it to rest for about 10 minutes. This rest period helps the juices redistribute, keeping the meat tender and juicy.
- Slice and serve: After resting, slice the gyro meat into thin strips. Serve the slices warm inside pita bread with your choice of traditional gyro toppings such as tzatziki sauce, tomatoes, onions, and lettuce.
Notes
- Use a mix of lamb and beef for authentic flavor and tenderness; however, ground chicken or turkey can be substituted for a leaner option.
- Allowing the meat to rest after baking ensures juicy slices rather than dry meat.
- For a crispier outside, broil the meat for a couple of minutes after baking, watching carefully to avoid burning.
- Make sure to finely chop the onion and garlic for even flavor distribution.
- Use fresh oregano instead of dried for a more vibrant herbal note if available, adjusting quantities accordingly.
