Description

Delight in these heart-shaped red velvet waffles, a perfect sweet brunch idea for Valentine’s Day or any special breakfast. These fluffy, cocoa-infused waffles are tinted with vibrant red food coloring and served with optional toppings like whipped cream, fresh berries, maple syrup, or a creamy cream cheese glaze for an extra indulgence.

Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Wet Ingredients

  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 3/4 cups buttermilk
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon red food coloring

Optional Toppings

  • Whipped cream
  • Fresh berries
  • Maple syrup
  • Cream cheese glaze (see Notes)

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare Waffle Iron: Preheat your waffle iron and lightly grease it with non-stick spray or melted butter to ensure waffles do not stick.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, unsweetened cocoa powder, granulated sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until evenly combined.
  3. Combine Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs, buttermilk, vegetable oil, vanilla extract, and red food coloring until fully integrated and smooth.
  4. Mix Batter: Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and gently stir until just combined. Avoid overmixing; a few lumps are fine to keep the waffles tender.
  5. Cook Waffles: Pour about 1/3 to 1/2 cup of batter (depending on your waffle iron size) onto the preheated waffle iron. Cook according to your waffle maker’s instructions until the waffles are crisp on the outside and thoroughly cooked inside.
  6. Serve: Carefully remove the waffles, repeat with remaining batter, and serve warm with your favorite toppings like whipped cream, fresh berries, maple syrup, or cream cheese glaze.

Notes

  • To make cream cheese glaze, blend 4 oz cream cheese, 1/2 cup powdered sugar, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract, and 2–3 tablespoons milk until smooth and pourable.
  • These waffles freeze well; reheat them in a toaster or oven for best results.
