Description

A classic and comforting green bean casserole featuring fresh green beans baked in a creamy mushroom sauce, topped with crispy fried onions for a perfect blend of flavors and textures. This easy-to-make dish is ideal for family dinners or holiday gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale

Vegetables

  • 4 cups fresh green beans, trimmed

Creamy Sauce

  • 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Topping

  • 1 1/3 cups crispy fried onions

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to ensure it is ready for baking the casserole.
  2. Blanch Green Beans: Boil water and blanch the fresh green beans in it for 5 minutes to slightly soften them while retaining their crispness and color. Drain well.
  3. Prepare Sauce: In a large bowl, combine the cream of mushroom soup, milk, soy sauce, and black pepper. Mix thoroughly until smooth.
  4. Mix Beans and Sauce: Add the blanched green beans into the soup mixture and stir well to coat all the beans evenly.
  5. Assemble Casserole: Pour the green bean and sauce mixture into a baking dish, spreading it out evenly.
  6. Add Initial Topping: Sprinkle 2/3 cup of the crispy fried onions evenly over the top of the mixture in the dish.
  7. Bake First Stage: Bake the casserole in the preheated oven for 25 minutes until heated through.
  8. Stir Casserole: Remove the dish from the oven and gently stir the casserole to mix flavors.
  9. Add Final Topping & Bake: Top the casserole with the remaining fried onions and bake for an additional 5-10 minutes until the onions are golden brown and crispy on top.

Notes

  • Blanching green beans helps keep them crisp and maintains their vibrant green color.
  • Adjust seasoning with additional salt or pepper if desired.
  • For a creamier texture, use whole milk or substitute part of the milk with cream.
  • Crispy fried onions can be found in the canned vegetable section of most supermarkets.
  • This casserole can be prepared ahead of time and baked just before serving.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheated in the oven for best texture.
