Description

Golden Sourdough Cheesy Breadsticks are a delicious and easy appetizer made using sourdough discard combined with mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses. These breadsticks have a golden, bubbly cheese crust with aromatic garlic and Italian herbs, perfect for serving warm alongside marinara sauce.

Ingredients

Scale

Dough

  • 1 cup sourdough discard (unfed)
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

Seasoning and Topping

  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried Italian herbs
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter

Instructions

  1. Prepare Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the sourdough discard, warm water, olive oil, sugar, and salt. Stir in the all-purpose flour until a shaggy dough forms, then knead by hand or with a mixer for about 5 to 7 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic.
  2. First Rise: Cover the dough and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, allowing it to develop flavor and texture.
  3. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
  4. Shape and Season: Roll out the risen dough into a rectangle about 1/4-inch thick on the prepared baking sheet. Brush the entire surface with melted butter, then evenly sprinkle garlic powder, dried Italian herbs, shredded mozzarella, and grated Parmesan cheese over the top.
  5. Cut Breadsticks: Use a pizza cutter to slice the cheese-covered dough into 1-inch-wide strips to form individual breadsticks.
  6. Bake: Bake the breadsticks in the preheated oven for 15 to 18 minutes until they are golden brown and the cheese is bubbly and melted.
  7. Cool and Serve: Allow the breadsticks to cool slightly before serving warm, optionally paired with marinara sauce for dipping.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, serve with marinara sauce for dipping.
  • You can substitute cheddar or a cheese blend in place of mozzarella for a flavor variation.
  • These breadsticks are best enjoyed warm to preserve their softness and cheese melt.
