Description

This classic Cube Steak recipe features tenderized cube steaks seasoned and seared to perfection, topped with caramelized onions and a rich, savory gravy. Perfect for a comforting weeknight meal, this dish combines simple ingredients and straightforward techniques to deliver a hearty and flavorful dinner in just 20 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 4 cube steaks
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 4 tbsp butter, divided
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp sea salt
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 3 tbsp flour, gluten free or regular
  • 2 cups broth, chicken or beef
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce, gluten free if needed

Instructions

  1. Cook the Onions: In a large skillet over medium heat, melt 2 tablespoons of butter and add the sliced onions. Cook for 5 to 6 minutes, stirring frequently until the onions soften and begin to brown. Remove the onions from the skillet and set them aside on a plate, leaving any leftover butter in the pan.
  2. Tenderize and Season the Steaks: While the onions cook, place plastic wrap over the cube steaks and use a meat mallet to pound them to about 1/2-inch thickness. Season both sides generously with black pepper, sea salt, paprika, and garlic powder to infuse flavor.
  3. Sear the Steaks: Place the seasoned cube steaks into the same skillet over medium heat. Sear each side for 2 minutes until nicely browned. Once done, remove the steaks from the skillet and place them on a plate.
  4. Make the Gravy: Add the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter to the skillet and melt over medium heat. Sprinkle in the flour and whisk continuously to form a roux. Gradually pour in the chicken or beef broth and Worcestershire sauce while whisking constantly to prevent lumps. Bring the mixture to a boil; after approximately 2 minutes, the gravy will thicken and become smooth.
  5. Combine and Heat Through: Turn off the heat and return the seared steaks and cooked onions to the skillet with the gravy. Spoon the sauce evenly over the steaks to coat them thoroughly. Warm through gently for a minute to meld the flavors.
  6. Serve: Serve the cube steaks hot with the caramelized onions and rich gravy spooned generously on top. Enjoy this hearty and comforting meal!

Notes

  • For extra tenderness, pound the steaks evenly to 1/2-inch thickness.
  • You can use either chicken or beef broth depending on your flavor preference.
  • Use gluten-free flour and Worcestershire sauce to make the recipe gluten-free.
  • Serve alongside mashed potatoes or steamed vegetables for a complete meal.
