Ingredients
Scale
Onions
- 4 small onions
Dry Coating
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
Wet Coating
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup buttermilk
Breading
- 1 cup breadcrumbs
Other
- Cooking spray
Instructions
- Prepare the Onions: Peel the onions and cut off the tops. Carefully slice each onion into petals by making vertical cuts around the onion, ensuring you leave the root intact so it holds together.
- Prepare the Coatings: In one bowl, combine the flour, paprika, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. In a second bowl, whisk together the eggs and buttermilk. In a third bowl, place the breadcrumbs.
- Coat the Onions: Dip each onion first into the flour mixture, coating fully. Then dip into the egg and buttermilk mixture, allowing excess to drip off. Finally, coat thoroughly with breadcrumbs, pressing gently so they adhere properly.
- Preheat the Air Fryer: Set your air fryer to 375°F (190°C) and allow it to preheat for a few minutes to ensure even cooking.
- Cook the Onions: Lightly spray each coated onion with cooking spray and place in the air fryer basket. Cook for 15-20 minutes, flipping onions halfway through to ensure all sides become golden brown and crispy.
- Serve: Carefully remove the blooming onions from the air fryer and serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce for a delicious appetizer.
Notes
- Be sure not to slice the root of the onion completely so the petals stay connected.
- Use cooking spray to help achieve a crispy texture without deep frying.
- Flipping halfway through cooking promotes even crispness on all sides.
- For best results, serve immediately while still hot and crispy.
