Ingredients
Scale
Main Ingredients
- 2 pounds russet potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 large egg
- 1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar or Edam)
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- Vegetable oil for frying
Instructions
- Boil the Potatoes: Place the peeled and chunked potatoes in a pot of salted water and boil until tender, about 15 to 20 minutes. Drain thoroughly to remove excess water.
- Mash and Cool: Mash the boiled potatoes until smooth and allow them to cool slightly to prevent a sticky dough when mixed.
- Prepare Potato Mixture: In a mixing bowl, combine the mashed potatoes, all-purpose flour, egg, shredded cheese, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, paprika, and chopped parsley. Mix well until a soft, cohesive dough forms.
- Shape the Sticks: Take small portions of the potato mixture and shape each into stick-like forms, about the size of a finger.
- Coat with Breadcrumbs: Lightly coat each shaped potato stick in breadcrumbs, ensuring an even covering for crispiness.
- Heat Oil: Heat vegetable oil in a deep pan over medium heat until hot enough for frying (around 350°F or until a breadcrumb sizzles upon contact).
- Fry the Sticks: Fry the potato cheese sticks in batches for about 3 to 4 minutes until they are golden brown and crispy on all sides. Avoid overcrowding the pan.
- Drain and Serve: Remove the fried sticks from the oil and drain them on paper towels to remove excess oil. Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauce.
Notes
- Allow the mashed potatoes to cool slightly before mixing to ensure the dough isn’t sticky and easier to handle.
- For a lighter preparation, you can bake or air fry the sticks at 400°F instead of frying.
- Adjust the seasoning and type of cheese according to your preference. Smokier cheeses will add more depth of flavor.
