Ingredients
Scale
Filling
- 1/2 lb ground meat (your choice)
- 2 green onions, finely chopped
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1/4 cup finely chopped water chestnuts (optional)
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon white pepper
Assembly
- 30 wonton wrappers
- Water for sealing
Frying
- Vegetable oil for frying (enough to deep fry, approx. 4 cups)
Instructions
- Prepare the filling: In a mixing bowl, thoroughly combine the ground meat with finely chopped green onions, soy sauce, sesame oil, grated fresh ginger, minced garlic, chopped water chestnuts if using, salt, and white pepper until well mixed.
- Fill the wontons: Lay one wonton wrapper on a clean, flat surface and spoon about 1 teaspoon of the prepared filling into its center.
- Seal the wontons: Moisten the edges of the wrapper with water using your finger, then fold the wrapper diagonally to form a triangle. Press out any air pockets and seal the edges tightly. For a more traditional shape, bring the opposite corners of the triangle together and seal with a bit of water to form a neat pouch.
- Heat oil for frying: In a deep pan or wok, heat vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C). Make sure there is enough oil to fully submerge the wontons for even frying.
- Fry the wontons: Carefully place a few wontons at a time into the hot oil. Fry for 2-3 minutes, turning occasionally, until they are golden brown and crisp all over. Avoid overcrowding the pan.
- Drain and serve: Remove fried wontons with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels to remove excess oil. Serve them hot with soy sauce, sweet chili sauce, or your preferred dipping sauce.
Notes
- Water chestnuts add a delightful crunch but can be omitted if unavailable or undesired.
- Ensure the oil temperature remains steady at 350°F to achieve crispy wontons without greasiness.
- If sealing is difficult, use a little more water on the edges to prevent the wontons from opening during frying.
- For a different flavor profile, try using ground chicken, pork, or shrimp as the filling.
- Wontons can be prepared ahead, refrigerated for a few hours, and fried just before serving for convenience.
