Ingredients
Scale
Basic Treat Mixture
- 6 cups Rice Krispies Cereal
- 10 oz Mini Marshmallows (Regular marshmallows can be substituted)
- 1/4 cup Unsalted Butter (Coconut oil can be used for dairy-free option)
Coloring and Topping
- 1 bottle Gel Food Coloring (Liquid food coloring can work)
- 1 cup Sprinkles (Optional, choose any variety)
Instructions
- Melt the Butter and Marshmallows: In a large saucepan over low heat, melt the unsalted butter and mini marshmallows together. Stir gently and continuously until the mixture is smooth and well combined, ensuring no marshmallow clumps remain.
- Divide and Color the Mixture: Pour the melted marshmallow mixture into separate bowls, depending on how many colors you want. Add a few drops of gel food coloring to each bowl and mix until the color is rich and evenly distributed.
- Add Rice Krispies: Gently fold the Rice Krispies cereal into each colored marshmallow mixture. Be careful to maintain the crunch by mixing slowly and thoroughly until all the cereal is coated.
- Layer the Mixtures: Line a baking pan with parchment paper. Starting with one colored mixture, press it firmly into the pan to create a distinct layer. Repeat this step for each color, layering carefully to keep the colors separated and vibrant.
- Cool and Set: Allow the layered treats to cool at room temperature for about 30 minutes. This will help them to set firmly and hold their shape when cut.
- Cut and Serve: Once set, remove the treats from the pan using the parchment paper edges. Cut into squares or rectangles as desired.
- Optional Decoration: For a festive touch, sprinkle extra sprinkles on top of the treats before they cool completely or immediately after layering.
Notes
- You can substitute regular marshmallows for mini marshmallows if needed, but mini marshmallows melt more evenly.
- Gel food coloring is preferred for more vibrant colors and less sticky consistency compared to liquid food coloring.
- Use coconut oil instead of butter for a dairy-free version.
- Press layers firmly to ensure compact, defined color layers that hold their shape when cut.
- These treats are best enjoyed within 2–3 days at room temperature for maximum crispness.
