Ingredients
Scale
Filling
- 6 cups sliced apples (about 6-7 medium apples)
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/8 teaspoon ground allspice
- Pinch of ground cloves
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
Topping
- 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter (cold and cubed)
- 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to prepare for baking the apple crisp.
- Prepare Apples: Peel, core, and slice the apples into 1/4-inch thick slices, creating a uniform texture in the filling.
- Mix Filling: In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples with granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, cloves, lemon juice, and cornstarch. Toss until the apples are evenly coated with all the spices and sugar.
- Place Filling: Pour the spiced apple mixture into a 9×13-inch baking dish, spreading it evenly.
- Prepare Topping: In a medium bowl, mix oats, all-purpose flour, brown sugar, salt, and cinnamon. Add the cold, cubed butter and work it into the dry ingredients using your fingers or a pastry cutter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in chopped nuts if using.
- Assemble Crisp: Evenly sprinkle the topping mixture over the apple filling in the baking dish.
- Bake: Bake the apple crisp for 45-50 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbly around the edges. If the topping browns too quickly, cover loosely with aluminum foil to prevent burning.
- Cool: Remove from the oven and let cool for 15-20 minutes to allow the filling to set slightly.
- Serve: Serve warm, optionally topped with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for extra indulgence.
Notes
- Use a variety of apples like Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Fuji for the best flavor and texture balance.
- The nuts in the topping are optional but add a nice crunch and depth of flavor.
- Make sure the butter is cold when mixing the topping to ensure a crumbly texture.
- If you prefer a less sweet crisp, reduce the added sugars slightly.
- Leftovers can be stored covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated before serving.
