Description

This Chicken Tikka Biryani is a fragrant and flavorful one-pot meal combining marinated chicken with aromatic basmati rice and traditional Indian spices. Tender chicken breasts are cooked with tikka masala paste and yogurt, then simmered with cumin and coriander in chicken broth before being combined with fluffy basmati rice. Garnished with fresh cilantro, this dish offers a delicious fusion of spicy and creamy flavors perfect for a hearty dinner.

Ingredients

Scale

Chicken Marinade and Main Ingredients

  • 2 chicken breasts, cubed
  • 2 tablespoons tikka masala paste
  • 1/2 cup yogurt

Rice and Aromatics

  • 2 cups basmati rice
  • 1 onion, sliced

Spices and Broth

  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • Salt to taste

Garnish

  • Fresh cilantro for garnish

Instructions

  1. Sauté the onions: Heat a large pot over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they turn golden brown and develop a sweet aroma, about 8-10 minutes.
  2. Cook the chicken: Add the cubed chicken breasts to the pot with the onions. Cook the chicken until it is browned on all sides and mostly cooked through, about 5-7 minutes.
  3. Add the spices and yogurt: Stir in the tikka masala paste, yogurt, ground cumin, and ground coriander. Cook for an additional 3-4 minutes, allowing the spices and yogurt to meld with the chicken for a rich, flavorful sauce.
  4. Simmer the broth: Pour in the chicken broth and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer. This will help to combine all flavors and begin cooking the rice.
  5. Cook the rice: Rinse the basmati rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Add the rice to the pot, stir once to distribute evenly, cover with a tight-fitting lid, reduce the heat to low, and cook for about 20 minutes or until the rice is tender and the liquid has been fully absorbed.
  6. Garnish and serve: Remove the pot from heat and let it rest covered for 5 minutes. Fluff the rice gently with a fork. Garnish with fresh cilantro leaves before serving immediately to enjoy a fragrant and flavorful biryani.

Notes

  • Rinse the basmati rice to remove excess starch for fluffier rice.
  • You can substitute chicken breasts with chicken thighs for juicier meat.
  • Adjust the amount of tikka masala paste according to your preferred spice level.
  • Resting the biryani for a few minutes after cooking helps the flavors to meld further.
  • Serve with a side of raita or cucumber salad for a balanced meal.
