Ingredients
Scale
Base
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- ½ cup brown sugar
- 1 cup unsalted butter (melted)
Topping
- 1 cup caramel sauce
- 1 cup chocolate chunks
- ½ cup chocolate chips
- ½ cup chopped nuts (optional)
- ¼ tsp sea salt (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare Pan: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line an 8×8 inch baking pan with parchment paper to prevent sticking and make removal easier.
- Make the Crust: In a mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, brown sugar, and melted unsalted butter. Stir until the mixture is crumbly and evenly combined. Press this mixture firmly into the prepared pan to form a compact crust layer.
- Bake the Crust: Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake the crust for 10 to 12 minutes until it turns lightly golden. This ensures a sturdy base and enhances flavor.
- Add Caramel Layer: Once the crust is warm and out of the oven, pour the caramel sauce evenly over it. Use a spatula to spread the caramel smoothly across the surface.
- Top with Chocolate and Nuts: Sprinkle the chocolate chunks and optional chopped nuts evenly over the caramel layer. If using sea salt, sprinkle it lightly on top to bring out the sweetness.
- Bake Again: Return the pan to the oven and bake for an additional 10 minutes, allowing the caramel to bubble and the toppings to set slightly.
- Add Melted Chocolate Chips: Remove from the oven and immediately sprinkle the chocolate chips over the hot caramel. Let them melt for a few minutes, then gently spread the melted chocolate to cover the surface evenly.
- Cool and Slice: Allow the bars to cool completely at room temperature, which helps the layers to set firmly. Once cooled, slice into squares for serving.
Notes
- Use high-quality chocolate chunks and chips for the best flavor results.
- Adding a pinch of sea salt or toasted nuts enhances the flavor with a salty crunch.
- Chill the bars in the refrigerator before slicing to achieve neat, clean squares.
- Store bars in an airtight container; they can be frozen for up to 2–3 months to maintain freshness.
